The dramatic incident was captured by traffic cameras on the Zhuji-Yongjia Expressway over the city of Wenzhou, which is in Zhejiang Province in East China, on 20th November.

The video shows Mr Zheng, driver of a Chinese-made Baojun SUV, travelling at a reported 90 kph (55 mph) when he rear-ends the heavy goods vehicle driven by Mr Dou.

The front of his white SUV is lodged in the undercarriage of the articulated lorry’s trailer, with Mr Dou reportedly unaware of the crash.

Mr Zheng’s car, which was written off in the collision, was then dragged along the motorway at 80 kph (50 mph) for 3.5 kilometres (2.1 miles) until another lorry driver alerted Mr Dou.

Mr Zheng was found largely unharmed in his mangled car, which had a smoking engine and all its airbags deployed, reports said.

He recalled: “I wanted to call the police but didn’t know which number to ring.

“In my panic, I was only thinking of how I could get the lorry to stop.

“I tried to wind down my window but it had stopped working, so I opened the door and started shouting.

“There was no response from the lorry driver and my engine was smoking.

“I was afraid my car would catch fire, so I was preparing to jump out.”

Fortunately for Mr Zheng, he managed to wave down a passing lorry before he needed to throw himself onto the motorway.

Wenzhou police said Mr Zheng drove six hours straight and only stopped briefly to rest on three occasions.

He will be held fully liable for the collision for driving while tired, they added.
