Barcelona striker Luis Suarez has said Liverpool have “the best fans in the world” and called his controversial 2010 World Cup handball “history”.

Uruguayan superstar Suarez, 32, made the comments during an interview with YouTube channel ‘OTRO’ where he spoke about key moments in his career.

When speaking about his time at Liverpool, Suarez praised their supporters saying: “In my opinion, they are some of the best fans for all the love they showed me the entire time I was at Liverpool.

“They loved me and treated me spectacularly. That is why they are some of the best fans in the world, for me, they are the best.”

Suarez went on to speak about his famous handball in the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals against Ghana which prevented a goal by former AC Milan striker Dominic Adiyiah, 30, in extra time and saw him sent off.

Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan, 34, missed the resulting penalty and Uruguay eventually won the match by penalties and advanced to the semi-finals.

Suarez called his handball “history” saying it was “history for my country because after that play where I avoided a goal, then Uruguay advanced by penalties to a World Cup semi-final after many years.

“I think it was history for Uruguayan football and for the national team.”

The former Liverpool superstar went on to speak about his friendship with fellow Barcelona forward Lionel Messi saying: “He opened the doors for me at the club since I arrived here.

“Besides being friends in football we are also friends outside of it. I think to have a good relationship on the pitch, you also have to have one off it.”

Suarez is currently recovering from an external meniscal injury in his right knee which could keep him off the pitch for a reported four months.

Barcelona are reportedly looking to sign a player to take his place while he recovers with rumours of Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, 30, making a move to the Spanish club giants.

Barcelona are level on 43 points with Real Madrid but are top of La Liga on goal difference. They are set to play Valencia on Saturday 25th January.
