Mum-of-two Ana Rosa Mavarez underwent the procedure at a beauty clinic in a shopping centre in the city of Cumana in Sucre State, Venezuela, on 25th February.

The procedure, also known as laser lipo, uses laser energy to burn fat, which is then metabolically removed from the body through natural means.

The person who performed the procedure – identified in reports as Alexander Larrochelle – said it went well and without complications.

But hours later, at around 10pm, Ana began to experience severe pain and started struggling to breathe.

Her family says they begged staff at the beauty clinic to call an ambulance, but they allegedly refused, according to reports.

However, her condition worsened and staff ended up intubating her at around 00.30am before transferring her to a hospital some four hours later.

However, she arrived without vital signs, and medics were only able to pronounce her dead, leaving her two children, aged eight and 11, orphaned.

Her mother, Petra Rivero, has since revealed that Ana’s death took place at around 11pm from internal bleeding.

This would mean she was already dead when staff at the beauty clinic intubated her.

Prosecutors in Sucre have since opened an investigation to clarify if anyone is at fault for Ana’s untimely death.

Larrochelle is not believed to be the owner of the beauty clinic in question. He was reportedly arrested on 26th February.

Several witnesses have already been interviewed as part of the investigation, according to local media.

Venezuela is believed to have one of the world’s highest cosmetic surgery rates, with breast enlargement the most popular procedure.
