An autopsy on a student who was found hanged from a ceiling fan in her university dorm room in September has shown that she was raped and killed.

The Pakistani medical student, identified as Nimrita, was found dead on 16th September in her hostel room at the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SMBBMU) in the city of Larkana in the southern Pakistani province of Sindh.

The final-year student was reportedly studying dentistry.

Police surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi told local media that the victim was “murdered by strangulation after rape”.

He added that the “post-mortem opinion is clear”.

The autopsy report was issued on 6th November by the Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) in Larkana.

The young woman’s death was reportedly caused by suffocation as there were clear signs of ligature having been used on her neck.

The report said: “The ligature marks also tally with the information. Such signs are produced by either strangulation or hanging and are to be ascertained through circumstantial evidence corroborated at the crime scene by state investigation authorities.”

According to local media, a DNA test also established semen on the victim’s clothes and a vaginal swab showed forced penetration.

The findings support the claims of the victim’s brother Vishal, who maintained that his sister had been murdered because she was neither depressed or the kind of person who would end their own life.

The student’s death has sparked province-wide protests and the local authorities have ordered a judicial inquiry into the murder.

The investigation is ongoing.
