A Muslim student has sparked outrage by performing a Nazi salute during a university assembly before thanking Hitler for the Holocaust in an anti-Semitic rant on social media.

The incident took place at the University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in the city of Kota Kinabalu located in the eastern Malaysian state of Sabah before the unnamed student shared the Nazi salute photo alongside a hate-filled rant on Facebook.

According to local media, his social media post has since been taken down.

He wrote in Malay: “This Hitler symbol that I used on the sacred UMS stage is because the world is blind and deaf when Jews act as if Islamic countries are clowns for the world’s entertainment.

“Therefore, in solidarity with Gaza and because of the anger, hatred and vengeance towards Jews, I thank Hitler for the Holocaust.”

After the Muslim student’s post sparked outrage online, the university moved to distance itself from his controversial remarks.

A UMS statement said: “The graduate took advantage of the situation to stop and make the gesture as if he was waving at the audience.

“UMS regrets that the picture uploaded by the graduate in his Facebook post is taken on the convocation stage.”

Netizens slammed the student for his stance, with many Muslims pointing out that they would have suffered under Nazism as well.

One Twitter user said: “Hitler-praising Muslims always seem to forget that if we had lived under Nazi leadership, we would probably have been persecuted too.”

‘Jefry Musa’ commented: “Does this graduate know how many Jews are against the Israel nation and condemn how Palestinians are treated? Have you seen any of them make a mockery of themselves with a Nazi salute?”

Facebook user ‘Amzarul Dzemaludin Al-Khuderi’ wrote: “Let him see pictures in Topography of Terror [museum] in Berlin, so he knows how cruel the era was in the eyes of Germans themselves.”

Twitter user ‘Mikhail Hafiz’ remarked: “This person clearly knows nothing about the Holocaust and its repercussions across the world. Shame on him.”
