This student has been “left alone in the world” by coronavirus after it took her mother and grandmother on the same day.

Student Andjela Kostic, 25, from the city of Nish in southern Serbia was left fearing the worst after her mother Liljana Kostic, 55, and grandmother Vinka, 88, were both taken into hospital with coronavirus.

The dentistry student at the Medical University in Nish said: “My mum and my grandmother both were on ventilators in hospital.

“The condition of my grandmother was bad, but the prognoses for my mother were good. She was in hospital for 12 days, she fought with the worst bout of pneumonia. She was healthy all her life, she didn’t have any chronic illnesses. I thought she would survive”.

The student’s grandmother died on 5th April at 10:30 am and her mother passed away that evening at 7:30 pm. Andjela’s father died three years ago and she told reporters “now I am all alone in the world”.

Despite her sadness, she is now organising two funerals and she says people are trying to help her: “Many people have called me to offer to help. My college colleagues also called me. My father was a dentist, so now his friends who I haven’t heard from in a while are also supporting me. Everyone tells me I have to be strong”.

Local media report social media groups about her situation have been founded to help raise funds to help her financially.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, there have been 2,867 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Serbia with 66 deaths.
