A restaurant has been shut down after a viral video allegedly showed a staff member noshing on a leg of lamb before tossing the bone back into a vat of mutton stew.

The clip now seen more than a million times in less than 24 hours was taken by a passer-by in the city of Yancheng in China’s eastern Jiangsu Province.

The short video shows the female employee of the restaurant named Shuangyuan Mutton Soup, which is on the corner of Shuangyuan Road and Jiefang Road.

The footage reportedly shows her chewing on a piece of lamb in her hand before casually throwing it back into a metal vat of mutton stew boiling on the side.

The same vessel is used to serve the business’s apparently popular stew, while the restaurant also sells hot pot, fried foods and lamb skewers.

According to reports, the clip was recorded on 9th December, and it led to the restaurant’s closure when it went viral a few days later.

The restaurant owner, who has not been named, told local media that the woman caught on camera was only an employee, whose actions did not reflect the attitude of management.

The staff member has since been sacked, the statement continued.

The restaurant – now shut by food safety regulators – is expected to be reopened after making satisfactory ‘improvements’ following the hygiene scandal, reports said.

Members of the public were critical as well as sceptical about the restaurant’s future prospects.

‘Luoxi Yimx Yihao Fanqiejiang’ said: “That’s disgusting. I bet she’s drunk from the vat as well.”

‘Labi Xiaoxin-DaCc’ added: “Clearly not her first time.”

‘Caise de Yutang’ wrote: “Personal behaviour? More like you’ve allowed her to do it.”
