The Spanish Queen Letizia is on strict lockdown in her bedroom “only receiving visits from a nurse” after a government minster she met tested positive for COVID-19.

According to local media, the Spanish queen Letizia Ortiz is on lockdown in her bedroom as a precaution after she met Equality Minister Irene Montero on the 6th of March and the minister has now tested positive for coronavirus.

Reports said that the queen has been separated from the rest of the royal family as the Spanish crown faces challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic and the scandals over alleged money laundering by former King Juan Carlos.

Letizia and the rest of the Spanish royal family including King Felipe VI, and princesses Leonor and Sofia previously tested negative for the virus.

Royal chronicler Pilar Eyre wrote in her blog for the magazine ‘Lecturas’: “Doctor Manuel Martinez Perez forced Letizia to go into lockdown and wear a mask and glove, eating from a tray and only receiving visits from a nurse.”

The isolation is reportedly a precautionary measure after minister Montero tested positive for COVID-19.

Eyre also revealed that the queen had put pressure on King Felipe VI as she thought he should address citizens to show sympathy.

Eyre said: “The queen said ‘Felipe you have to show up and say something, people are dying, the country is shaking, they need to know you are by their side, that you share their suffering’”

King Felipe VI addressed Spanish citizens in a public speech on 18th March.

The Spanish King also distanced himself from his father Juan Carlos and renounced his inheritance from him following reports that the elderly monarch had received 100 million USD (84,021,500 GBP) from Saudi King Abdallah via the Swiss account of an entity listed in Panama.

Local media report that the donated money is believed to be a commission for the award of the works of the high-speed rail lines between the cities of Medina and Mecca to Spanish companies.
