This is the moment a large group of workers gather outside a Spanish hospital to pay tribute to a 57-year-old nurse who died of COVID-19 while fighting on the frontlines.

The incident took place outside the Hospital Universitario Severo Ochoa in the Spanish city of Leganes in the Community of Madrid when the victim’s colleagues gathered to honour his passing.

According to local media, the hospital workers held a minute’s silence before the song ‘Resistire’, which has become an anthem for COVID-19 victims in Spain, played in the nurse’s honour.

Workers held a sign with the message “Always in our memory. Esteban. RIP.”

Esteban Penarrubia was the first medic to die of COVID-19 at the Severo Ochoa hospital, one of the most affected in the Community of Madrid.

A spokesperson for the hospital told local media: “Everyone here loved him and we send our admiration and affection to him, his family and his colleagues.”

A spokesperson for the Leganes City Council called it a “very sad” period for the city and said that Esteban cared for his fellow citizens with dedication and professionalism.

According to the latest figures from the Johns Hopkins University, Spain has reported 172,541 cases of COVID-19 and 18,056 related deaths.
