Victim Valeria Noemi Ramirez, 26, died from a single gunshot at the family home in Godoy Cruz, Argentina, on 25th November.

Her policeman husband Franco Nicolas Cuello had blamed their four-year-old son, saying he had snatched the firearm from a table and pulled the trigger.

But he was rumbled when the lad revealed during a psychotherapy counselling session on 22nd December: “My dad shot my mum.”

Valeria died in hospital hours after she was shot in the face at point-blank range.

Police had been called to the home following the shooting, and Cuello had told them he had been cleaning his service weapon and had left it on the table.

But, he claimed, his son had grabbed it and accidentally fired it, killing his mother.

Forensic analysis cast doubt on his version of events, leading Cuello to change his story and admit he had shot his partner – but, he claimed, by accident.

Investigators corroborated that it was, indeed, Cuello who had pulled the trigger after his son made the admission during the psychotherapy session.

Prosecutors believe the couple had argued and that the policeman had intended to kill Valeria when he shot her.

The couple also have a daughter, who is the youngest of the two children. It is not clear who is now raising them.

Cuello is currently in custody and is charged with aggravated murder. If found guilty, he faces life behind bars.
