An alleged Sinaloa Cartel boss – and nephew of one of the FBI’s most-wanted drug lords – has been arrested in an elite forces crackdown.

The general prosecution of Mexico said in a press statement that Ismael Quintero Arellanes, identified as the nephew of wanted drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, had been arrested in Culiacan, in the western Mexican state of Sinaloa.

An elite command from the Mexican Navy and Army reportedly worked with prosecutors and American intelligence services to locate and arrest Arellanes without a shot being fired.

He has now been taken to the North Prison in the Mexican capital Mexico City and reports state the US government will begin the extradition process as he is wanted in a New York court for criminal association, possession of an illegal weapon and drug trafficking.

Arellanes, alias ‘El Mayel’ is thought to have been in charge of logistical support for the Sinaloa Cartel formerly led Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

Local media report he was in charge of the coordination of the marijuana and opium poppy crops in the area known as Badiraguato, as well as sending drugs to the United States.

In 2016, he was the intermediary for the release of Ivan Archivaldo and Jesus Alfredo Guzman Salazar, El Chapo’s sons, when they were kidnapped by members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in the La Leche restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco state.

He is also believed to be the culprit of the murder of three women in the community of Los Naranjos, in the municipality of Badiraguato, Sinaloa.

His arrest came on the same day Victor Manuel Felix Beltran, one of the cooperators of El Chapo, broke out of prison.

Caro Quintero, his uncle, is one of the most wanted criminals of the world and remains a fugitive. He was one of the founders of the Guadalajara Cartel and is nicknamed ‘el narco de narcos’. He is on the list of the most-wanted criminals of the FBI.
