This is the moment a suspected drink-driver smashes into a metal barrier at a police checkpoint and speeds off in a shower of sparks before hitting a lamppost 40 seconds later.
The failed escape was captured on the dashcam of a police car that was in hot pursuit of the fleeing motorist in the city of Hefei which is the capital of China’s eastern Anhui Province.
The suspect, whose name has been withheld by authorities, can be seen driving straight through the traffic cones as well as a metal obstacle set up at the junction between the city’s Linquan Road and Fexi Road.
The cops leap out the way as the drink-driving suspect’s saloon car ploughs through the obstacle and ends up dragging the metal fence under its chassis. The incident happened on 28th December.
The dashcam police car gives chase through the busy streets until 40 seconds later when the suspect loses control during a turn and ends up slamming into the kerb of a traffic island.
The video shows authorities quickly arresting the motorist as he steps out his crashed car.
The police say the suspect failed a breathalyser test and admitted to having had a few drinks with his friends.
He was on his way home when he encountered the police checkpoint and decided to “try his luck”, leading to the dangerous stunt.
The suspect was taken into custody as further investigation continues.
