School director Madina Bersanova said she called in the police after the trouble threatened to get out of hand.

But the violence then got worse after one cop made an insulting comment about one of the pupils, according to local media.

And a mass brawl broke out after the policeman then allegedly hit the teenager in the face.

The smartphone footage shows a group of schoolchildren watching the fight when one of them jumps over a fence to join in the affray.

Police officers and schoolchildren and seen trading blows in the pitched street battle outside of the city’s public school No 54.

According to local media, gunshots can be heard although it cannot be seen who is firing and it is unclear who was responsible.

The incident happened on the day teenagers sat their exam, which is the Russian equivalent to Maths GCSE in the UK.

Ms Bersanova said the students involved were from other schools and had come to her school to sit the exam. None of the pupils was badly hurt.

An investigation has been launched into the incident by the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in the Chechen Republic.
