Police are investigating after a young boy tragically plunged to his death at a shopping centre when this glass panel he was leaning on suddenly came loose.

The accident, which resulted in the poor boy’s distraught mum cradling his limp body on the shopping centre floor, happened at the Haixi Electronic Commerce Park in Shishi City in East China’s Fujian Province, where the five-year-old’s parents work and also rent living quarters.

The boy’s mum, surnamed Qiu, said she and her two sons were about to go shopping when her youngest leaned on the glass railing and fell on 15th February.

A heartbreaking image shows Qiu clutching her dying child in her arms in the shopping centre atrium while her eldest son stands a few feet away looking on.

Pictures also show where the glass pane is thought to have came loose, with a screw appearing to be detached from the barrier.

The boy was taken to Shishi General Hospital where doctors diagnosed him with critical ruptures in both lungs.

He was declared dead less than an hour later.

The boy’s father, surnamed Dai, 36, said they rented shop space in the multi-storey shopping complex three years ago in order to selling clothing.

The distraught parents are now awaiting the results of the ongoing police investigation to see whether the shopping centre will be ordered to compensate them for their loss.
