This is the moment a sinking ship on a fish farm suddenly overturns on its side moments after the seven crew members were rescued.

The incident took place off the coast of Puerto de Chacabuco in the southern Chilean province of Aysen when the ‘Don Jacob’ ship sank while carrying out support work on the Humos 6 Australis Mar fish farm.

Reports said the vessel sank 40 metres (131 feet) after all seven crew members were safely evacuated by several small boats that were nearby.

In the footage, a large crane on the deck appears to drag the sinking ship onto its side.

A maritime official told local media: “The vessel was carrying out support work at the Humos 6’ centre and unfortunately, due to a bad manoeuvre, it ended up sinking.”

The spokesman added: “A boat has been sent from Puerto de Chacabuco with materials to deal with possible fuel contamination, although we do not have any reports of this happening.”

According to reports, the vessel will be examined underwater to ensure that it can be raised without further problems.

The investigation is ongoing.
