This is the moment an animal shelter worker films the flood devastation caused by Storm Gloria prompting them to call on local residents to provide a temporary home for their dogs.

The Xativa Animal Protection Society in the city of Xativa located in the eastern Spanish region of Valencia was badly affected by flooding after Storm Gloria battered the region this week.

The animal shelter said in a statement: “We cannot access the shelter by car and colleagues had to go there by foot. The shelter is totally flooded with some areas under half a metre of water.

“We urgently need to find alternative arrangements for the dogs so that firefighters can deal with the water levels.”

According to reports, Storm Gloria has battered 16 Spanish provinces and weather alerts have been issued across the country, warning of floods, snowfall, avalanches, high waves and strong winds.

Reports said that five people have been killed while four others are missing.

There have also been reports of rivers breaking their banks and the River Ter in Catalonia seriously affected the city of Girona.

The weather conditions have also led to the closure of 211 roads across Spain while power cuts continue to affect many households and schools and medical centres have been forced to close.

The UK Foreign Office has also issued a weather warning for any British holidaymakers travelling to or living in Spain, according to reports.
