Shakira Admits She Discusses Feminist Issues With Son, 7

Colombian pop star Shakira has admitted that she is a proud feminist who likes to discuss women’s rights with her seven-year-old son.

The 43-year-old singer admitted that she often speaks to her eldest son Milan, 7, about feminism and how women’s rights have been transformed in the West.

Shakira, who is married to Barcelona star Gerard Pique, said that she discusses how “women were not always considered equal to men”.

She added: “His eyes were wide open, he could not believe it.”

During the interview with the magazine Marie Claire, Shakira emphasised that women “have a vital role in society” but a lot of things still need to change.

She said: “Yes, I consider myself a feminist. I care a lot that girls have the same opportunities and education as boys.”

The Colombian singer said that it is important to highlight inequality from an early age in schools otherwise “it is very difficult they will overcome inequality”.

The singer, who is also Unicef ambassador and openly supports the upcoming presidency of Joe Biden, said that she also supports green issues because she feels climate change is a pressing matter.

The singer, who lives in Barcelona with Pique and her two children, also said that the pandemic has forced her to adapt and learn how to prioritise what is most important in life and “value those you’re closest to”.
