Sevilla star Diego Carlos – who played with plane accident victim Emiliano Sala- has said he “meditated on his bed and cried” in a tearful interview in which he spoke about learning of the tragedy.
The comments came in an interview for television programme “El Chiringuito De Jugones” broadcast by Spanish television channel La Sexta.
Diego Carlos, who played for top-flight French club Nantes from to 2016 to 2019 during which time he became close with Argentine striker Sala, who died in a tragic plane accident after he was signed by Premier League club Cardiff City.
Carlos spoke about the moment he first heard the news and said: “I called him and called him and he would not answer. Then I saw the plane did not arrive in the end.
“I got home and meditated on my bed and cried. My son asked me ‘what is wrong dad?’ I did not know what to say.”
Carlos said his eventual answer was “dad has lost a friend, a great friend” and praised Sala’s personality saying: “Emiliano was an incredible person. Very happy.
“He was always smiling when we got to practice. I follow people that always want to surpass their best, that will do anything to achieve their dreams. That was Emiliano.”
Carlos signed for Sevilla this year and has made 11 appearances scoring one goal for them. They are third in La Liga with 27 points leaving them one behind Real Madrid and Barcelona on 28 points.
Former striker Sala died in a plane accident in January 2019 as he was en route to being unveiled as a Cardiff player. The striker died in the accident and his body was later pulled from the English Channel.
Sala would have turned 29 on 31st October.
