Japanese cops have said that they are searching the suspect’s home.

The authorities suspect that evidence of alleged animal abuse and possibly the remains of a number of dead cats will be found at his property in Toyama City.

According to the police, an eyewitness has come forward to claim that the 52-year-old suspect tricked one cat into jumping into his vehicle by offering it food.

Reports said that workers from an animal rights organisation visited Niimura on a previous occasion after they received numerous calls from pet owners all over the prefecture claiming their cats had been abducted.

During the visit to his home, Niimura told them that he had abducted and killed between 50 and 100 cats in the last year alone.

It is currently unclear why the police did not intervene in the claims at the time.

The investigation is ongoing.
