The 72-year-old self-confessed cannibal accused of slaughtering up to 30 women and eating body parts after butchering them in his cellar has been moved to another prison for his own safety after other inmates tried to kill him.
Elderly Andres Filomeno was arrested at his home on Lomas de San Miguel Margaritas Street in the municipality of Atizapan de Zaragoza in the Mexican state of Mexico at around 8pm on 15th May.
According to the news site Infobae, he was sent to the Barrientos prison in Mexico State and was then moved to the Tenango del Valle prison after inmates tried to kill him on the night of 24th May.
Sergio Baltazar, the lawyer of the family of one of the suspect’s victims, Reyna Gonzalez, said: “He was apparently attacked, I think they wanted to deprive him of his life.”
The news site Excelsior said security teams will monitor the alleged serial killer more closely at the new prison while the authorities continue to look for the remains of further victims at his home.
Filomeno was arrested without any resistance when the police went to his home to interrogate him about the disappearance of one suspected victim, and they found the remains of a mutilated woman on the table in front of them, according to the news site Telediario.
Under questioning, the 72-year-old man reportedly admitted to killing around 30 women in a serial-killing spree lasting 20 years.
He also allegedly admitted to carrying out acts of cannibalism and eating parts of his victims’ corpses.
The authorities have yet to find the remains of all the suspect’s alleged victims, and the number quoted by him, if later confirmed, would exceed the 20 women killed by the ‘Monsters of Ecatepec’, the serial killing couple Juan Carlos Hernandez and Patricia Martinez between 2012 and 2018, according to Telediario.
Filomeno reportedly wrote down the names of at least 29 victims in a notebook.
Prosecutor Dilcya Garcia said they have found the skeletal remains of at least five people so far and confirmed that there is a list of many more names in the notebook.
According to the news site Televisa, the police also found knives suspected of being used to kill and dismember the victims.
Officers also found women’s belongings, including the ID of Flor Nineveh, who disappeared in October 2016. Another suspected victim has been named as Rubicela Gallegos Castillo, who disappeared in July 2019.
The authorities confirmed that the remains of Reyna Gonzalez were found at the property.
Gonzalez was last seen alive on 14th May when she went shopping where she reportedly bumped into the suspect, who lived nearby. It is believed she was the woman whose body parts were found on the table by officers.
Infobae said the suspect admitted to meeting many of his victims in nightclubs before tricking them to come home with him before stabbing them in the heart, cutting them up, and burying them in the basement.
He also reportedly admitted to throwing salt over the dead bodies to preserve them.
The investigation is ongoing.
