Authorities in Belgium have begun demolishing another home of notorious serial killer Marc Dutroux, who kidnapped and murdered several young girls in the 1990s.

Evil Dutroux was arrested in 1996 and sentenced to life in 2004 for the murders of An Marchal, 17, Eefje Lambrecks, 19, Julie Lejeune, eight, and Melissa Russo, eight.

The convicted serial killer and rapist, now aged 66, has spent more than 26 years in solitary confinement in Nivelles Prison.

The demolition of his home in the village of Sars-la-Buissiere, Lobbes Municipality, began on the morning of 14th March.

The bodies of Dutroux’s eight-year-old victims were found in the garden of the home on 17th August 1996.

Lobbes mayor Lucien Bauduin told local media: “It is gratifying to see the demolition begin. It puts an end to a sad period in the region.

“I contacted Julie and Melissa’s parents last week to tell them the news. Together we will think about what will happen to the site after the demolition.”

The works are expected to last two weeks.

The Wanty Group, which is carrying out the demolition, warns: “The site is monitored 24 hours a day by cameras and there is a police presence.

“Anyone who enters the area will be prosecuted.”

Dutroux’s other home in the town of Marcinelle, Charleroi Municipality, was demolished in June last year (2022).

An and Eefje were kept there against their will, while Julie and Melissa were murdered there.

Victims Sabine Dardenne, then 12, and Laetitia Delhez, then 14, were freed from the property.

A memorial garden is now being built on the plot where the house stood.

In 1989, Dutroux was sentenced to 13 years in prison for kidnapping and raping an underage girl, but he was released for good behaviour after just three years.

He kept a tiny cell in the basement of his Marcinelle home, where victims Julie and Melissa starved to death in 1995 as Dutroux served three months in jail for car theft.

His prime accomplice was his wife, Michelle Martin, now 63, who was sentenced to 30 years in prison and was released in 2012 after serving 16 years.

It was reported last year that Dutroux had also applied to be released from prison, but without success.
