He reportedly then went out to ride a bike but did not return and the captain of the boat then called the emergency services yesterday evening (Tuesday).

According to a Spanish Civil Guard spokesman told Central European News (CEN), the search is focused “in the area of Portinatx” where reports state the Brit’s bike has been found.

The search is ongoing with officers of the Spanish Civil Guard, Civil Protection and Local Police, along with a boat from the Special Group of Subaquatic Activities of the Spanish Civil Guard.

It is unknown if the man fell into the sea or not, the spokesman said to CEN who added that “another man, aged 41 (whose name has not been revealed) who lives on the island is also being searched for in the same area”.

Storm Gloria has been battering Spain’s eastern and northern coasts since Sunday and has reportedly left five people dead and four missing. Record-breaking winds and rain have been recorded in Catalonia and Valencia and 211 roads have been closed.

One of the victims has been identified as a 55-year-man of Ukrainian nationality. Rescuers are searching for a man who may have fallen whilst trying to tie up a boat in Palamos, in the eastern province of Girona.

In the Valencia region, the Civil Guard are looking for a man who was reported as missing in the town of Marina Baixa, whose car was found in a flooded area.
