This is the shocking moment a 12-year-old cyclist rides into a huge pothole and slams into the front of an oncoming van.

The incident took place in the city of Nikopol in the central Ukrainian region of Dnepropetrovsk Oblast where it was captured on CCTV.

In the clip, two cyclists are seen riding too close behind a white van to see the road in front properly, and as a result the front rider fails to see a large pothole in the road.

The front wheel gets stuck as the youngster tumbles over the handlebars and is catapulted into the path of an oncoming van.

The boy and his bike slam into the front of the van and he remains motionless on the tarmac while his companion runs over to help.

The 12-year-old boy was hospitalised with multiple fractures and traumas.

There have been no further updates on his condition or details on who his cycling companion was.

It is also unclear whether the local authorities are investigating the incident.

Netizen ‘Mikha Savel’ commented: “They call it natural selection. Sure, it’s sad, but why would you ride on a major road so close to the van in front?”
