This is the moment a class of Mexican primary schoolchildren hide under their desks in fear as a cartel shooting takes place outside.

The incident took place in the city of Nuevo Laredo, in the northwestern Mexican state of Tamaulipas during a reported confrontation between the hitmen of Noroeste cartel and officers of the Secretary of National Defence which left seven people dead and six injured.

In the video, the primary school children can be seen lying under their desks and the teacher can be heard saying “calm, calm kids, don’t stand up, don’t stand up for anything”.

The children stay on the floor as the teacher tells them the confrontation will end soon, saying not standing is “for your own good, for the good of everyone”.

She adds: “If a bullet comes through the window and we are on the ground nothing will happen to us, ok? we should learn. Sadly there is a lot of insecurity and it feels very ugly. We should learn to take care of ourselves in case of a shooting and always remain on the ground.”

The teacher also tells the children that the shooting is happening near the school. She reportedly reprimanded two students, called Pedro and Denzel, who allegedly tried to stand up or move but this is not seen in the video.

Local media report the confrontation lasted around 30 minutes and left seven people dead including one police officer and six civilians.
