This footage shows how a boy was left standing helplessly outside his home after his hapless dad drove to school without him.

A security camera outside the family home in Gaspar, Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil caught the blunder as it unfolded earlier this month (September).

The footage shows how the lad opened the back door of the car but closed it without getting in, only for his oblivious dad to drive off and leave him behind.

The clip racked up hundreds of thousands of views and left netizens in stitches after it was posted to social media.

Dad Marcelo Schroeder later told local media that his 12-year-old son had opened the car door, only to find a pile of clothes on the backseat.

He had then closed the door to go around the vehicle to get in on the other side.

Marcelo said: “He opened the door, closed it, and I didn’t connect the dots. From there to school, on the way, I was talking to him, asking him to tell the teacher that his brother had a fever and a sore throat.”

The dad said he began to find it strange that his son was not answering him, but he recalled that his children were often quiet during the school run and decided to make nothing of it.

Marcelo said: “Then when I arrived at the school gate I called, ‘Son? Son?’ When I looked back at him… My God, where is he?”

The hapless dad revealed that he had to stop his car on the way back home to dry his tears because he his blunder had made him cry with laughter.

He then picked up his son and took him to class.
