A schizophrenic mum accused of killing her three daughters with a hammer before suffocating them has been set free after a Mexican court found that she was not of sound mind at the time of the attack.
Martha Teresita Chavez, known as ‘The Hyena of Michoacan’, who reportedly worked as a teacher and dentist, confessed to killing her daughters on 21st March 2016 in the city of Morelia in the central Mexican state of Michoacan but she has since been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The victims, named Karina, Noemi and Camila, aged seven, five and three, were reportedly beaten with a hammer. After realising they were still alive, Chavez suffocated them with a scarf, according to local media.
At the time, the mother said: “I wanted to protect them, I didn’t want them to suffer when they grow up.”
According to neighbours, Chavez used to be a calm woman who was always kind to her daughters.
However, a former colleague told local media that he husband cheated on her and afterwards she started to display unpredictable behaviour.
She reportedly entered a psychiatric hospital in 2013 where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Since killing her three children, the judicial authorities have reportedly ruled that the woman was unaccountable for her actions after determining that she also suffers from schizophrenia.
Chavez has been set free and is in the custody of her father who is responsible for maintaining her medication, according to local media.
