This is the heartbreaking moment a poverty-stricken little boy is seen struggling to pull a huge trolley load of rubbish bigger than him to earn a few pennies.

An eyewitness with a smartphone filmed the moving scene in the city of Izmir in western Turkey’s Izmir Province.

The skinny youngster, who looks only about 11 or 12 years old, is seen desperately trying to pull a two-wheel trolley that clearly weighs more than he does.

He tries to pull it far enough forward so it rests on its wheels and he can drag it on but he is not heavy enough.

Eventually, he swings on the handle until the heavy load tips far enough forward for him to resume his journey alongside a busy dual carriageway.

But even then he struggles to make any headway with his load of rubbish collected from local bins in the hope of selling it for recycling.

The video was later posted online where it shocked netizens such as ‘Ahmet’ who said: “How ignorant we have become as a nation.”

According to the Humanium aid project for children, 17 percent of the Turkish population lives below the poverty line.

The International Work Organisation has been working to reduce child labour in the country but an estimated three percent of Turkish children do not go to school because they have to work to survive.

Izmir is Turkey’s third biggest city, after Istanbul and the capital of Ankara, and is regarded as one of the country’s most prosperous and progressive.
