A brave 21-year-old man in South Africa has died while saving a young woman from being gang raped.

Themba Nkumbi was shot dead by the gang-of-four after hearing the victim’s screams in the township of Soweto in the South African province of Gauteng.

According to the media source eNCA, the woman was standing outside her home when four men suddenly appeared.

The men reportedly surrounded her and began harassing her, causing her to scream.

Nkumbi heard her cries and opened the gate for her to scramble through, which she managed to do.

However, one of the men shot Nkumbi through the open gate and he died on the spot.

The unnamed victim said that she will always be grateful to the have-a-go hero.

She said: “I am not the same girl anymore. I feel indebted to him. If he didn’t open the gate for me, I would have been the one who is dead now.

“We would be talking a different story, I would be the one trending that they have found a girl raped and dead in the bushes.”

She added: “If I didn’t scream I don’t know what would’ve happened.”

Meanwhile, three suspects have been detained and will soon appear in court while the police try to track down the missing fourth gang member.

Nkumbi’s family said they hope his death will not be in vain, and encouraged others to act against gender-based violence.
