This is the moment a cleaner mops a stairwell in a block of flats before using the same mop to wipe down the handrail.

The incident was filmed in the city of Cluj in the north-western Romanian county of the same name and the video has been widely circulated on social media.

In the footage, a cleaner is seen mopping the stairwell before at the end of the clip lifting up the same mop to run down the handrail.

According to local media, the community property management association which employed the company has advised residents not to touch the handrails after reviewing the footage.

Reports said the community has since cancelled its contract with the cleaning company on the same day the incident occurred.

The same contractor reportedly cleans over 60 other apartment blocks in the city.

One angry resident said: “Because of the fact that this company cleans another 67 apartment blocks in the area and because of the way they carry out cleaning procedures, I have decided to send this video to the city council and local police department and I urge you to do the same if you notice anything like this going on.

“Why should we pay for such terrible cleaning and risk becoming infected at the same time?”

It is unclear if the local authorities have launched an investigation into the cleaning company’s practices yet.
