This is the moment Romanian Gypsies with sticks and shovels battle with a rival clan – who ram at least two people with a car – and police officers had to fire warning shots to keep them apart.

The incident was filmed in the city of Sacele in the central Romanian county of Brashov by one of the cops on the scene, and the footage was later shared on social media.

According to reports, local residents called the police to report an incident of public disorder and cops who then arrived on the scene found themselves having to defend themselves from fighting clans.

The footage shows men and women armed with sticks and shovels battling with the police on an unmade road.

At one point, a speeding car drives directly at a group of people and forces them to scatter, however the vehicle appears to get stuck next to a fence and locals batter the windscreen with sticks and shovels.

According to local media, the incident took place between two gypsy clans although the cause of the fighting is still unclear.

Most of the people involved were reportedly drunk and a police spokesperson said that officers had to fire warning shots in the air to diffuse the tension.

Six people required first aid on the scene while one clan member, whose identity has not been disclosed, was hospitalised. There has been no further updates on their condition, according to reports.

An investigation is underway.
