This is the moment a bungling motorist has his car whacked by an axe-wielding mob after he tried to dodge traffic by driving on the wrong side of the road.

The incident took place in Ciudad Azteca in the central Mexican state of Mexico when the unnamed motorist tried to avoid a traffic jam by driving up the wrong way of the adjacent lane.

In the footage, a black car stops behind a stationary vehicle on the wrong side of the road as a huge tailback is seen on the other lane.

Several men approach the car and start kicking it while one of them tries to open the driver’s door.

Suddenly, a stocky man in a red top enters the frame and swings an axe at the motorist’s windscreen.

He then whacks the car with the axe two more times before using the handle to hit the driver.

The motorist reverses out of the way as a resident in a blue top appears to make space for the black car to enter the long queue of traffic.

It is currently unclear if the police are investigating the incident.

According to state senator Patricia Mercado, around 16,000 people die in traffic accidents every year in Mexico.

She claimed that 90 percent of car accidents are caused by drink-drivers.
