Former World Cup champion Rivaldo has slammed Barcelona after they signed Danish forward Martin Braithwaite outside of the transfer window.
Brazil legend Rivaldo made the comments while speaking with Betfair, where he is an ambassador, after Barcelona’s shock signing of former Middlesborough forward Martin Braithwaite, 28, from Leganes.
When speaking about Braithwaite’s controversial move to Barcelona, Rivaldo said: “Honestly, I do not agree with or understand this Martin Braithwaite transfer.
“First of all, it is a move after the transfer window and moreover, because Barcelona could have chosen a kid from the Masia (academy) instead of this operation.”
The Masia de Can Planes, referred to as Masia for short, is Barcelona’s youth academy known for producing world-class Barcelona players such as Lionel Messi, 32, Andres Iniesta, 35, and Xavi Hernandez, 40.
Rivaldo went on to say: “Also, the club is starting to improve and I see no reason whatsoever to make this kind of effort to incorporate a striker that, with all respect, I doubt is the player FC Barcelona need right now.”
When speaking about the consequences Leganes may suffer as they sit bottom of La Liga, Rivaldo said: “They (Barcelona) take him away from a club that is trying to avoid relegation by paying the release clause. They (Leganes) will surely come out very damaged by this.”
Barcelona were given permission to sign Braithwaite outside the transfer window after announcing French superstar Ousmane Dembele’s six-month absence after undergoing surgery for a right hamstring injury.
Barcelona are second in La Liga with 52 points trailing Real Madrid by one point. Leganes are 19th tied at 19 points with last-place Espanyol but are on top by goal difference.
