This is the moment a heroic homeowner climbs a residential building to save a young boy who has fallen out of a window onto a third-floor canopy.

The five-year-old boy, whose name has not been given, had been left at home alone and was desperately looking for his mum when the accident happened at 1:45pm local time on 27th June.

Footage taken by nearby residents in Zhaoqing, a city in South China’s Guangdong Province, shows the boy sitting alone on the third-floor canopy and appearing too frightened to move.

While searching for his mum, he had squeezed out of the burglar bars outside his home and fell out, landing on the canopy just 40 centimetres (15 inches) wide.

As neighbours gather below and hold out a large blanket to catch him in case he falls, resident Zhao Jianhong can be seen climbing the side of the building clinging to the exposed PVC pipes.

Zhao, who is a local factory worker, said he was on his way out when he saw all the commotion.

He can be seen grabbing hold of the boy and carrying him into a neighbour’s open balcony, bringing applause and cheers from the other residents.

The boy was not harmed and was reunited with his mum shortly after.

Zhao said: “I was concerned he’d fall, so I climbed up and saved him.

“That’s it. I didn’t think too much. I took a look and decided I would be able to climb those pipes.

“But after I saved him, my legs wouldn’t stop shaking. I was worried I’d drop him.

“In the end, I held on to the burglar bars with one hand and picked him up with my other hand, then we went back into the building from the neighbour’s home.”
