A young Brazilian woman has reportedly been stabbed to death by her husband in front of her young son in French Guiana and family members are desperately trying to bring her body and two children home.

Romenia Brito, 28, who comes from the state of Tocantins in the North Region of Brazil, was stabbed to death in a village on Lawa River, which separates French Guiana from Suriname in northern South America.

The woman’s grieving relatives, who live in the Brazilian municipality of Buriti do Tocantins, are desperately trying to bring her body and two children home.

Holanda Brito Reis, 26, told local media she learned of her older sister’s fate on the morning of 23rd November when she sent a photo to her phone and she did not reply.

She said: “Here in the city there’s a party going on and we took a photo with the priest who baptised us when we were children. I sent the photo at around 6.40 am and saw that she’d been online some hours earlier at 4.26 am.

“I found it strange because she usually wakes up later. Shortly after, a woman called me from her number and said that my sister had died.”

The killing took place during the early hours and was reportedly witnessed by Brito’s 10-year-old son.

According to family members, the prime suspect is Brito’s husband, Aimar Lopes de Souza, who has been apprehended by the local authorities.

The woman’s two sons are currently with a neighbour in the same village. The other son is five years old.

Reis told local media: “The older boy saw everything. They are traumatised and all alone. We’re feeling powerless because the children are just crying and we can’t even give them a hug.”

Brito also has a 13-year-old son who lives with his grandmother in Buriti do Tocantins.

Reis told local media: “It’s his birthday on 24th December. She was planning to come back to celebrate with him.”

Brito had been living in French Guiana for 12 years, having moved to the French overseas department, which borders Brazil, at the age of 16.

Her body has been taken to Paramaribo, the capital city of the neighbouring country of Suriname.

The victim’s father is currently travelling to Paramaribo and is scheduled to arrive today (25 November).

The family has been in touch with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and they are helping to repatriate the body and bring the victim’s children back to Brazil.

It is unclear if Souza is the children’s biological father.

Details of the investigation are currently unknown.

French Guiana is home to large numbers of recent Brazilian economic migrants, many of whom work in the illegal gold mining industry.
