This is the moment a driver with relaxing music on the radio goes the wrong way on a motorway and crashes head-on with an oncoming car after misinterpreting his satnav’s instructions to “keep left”.

Dashcam footage shows the motorist, who police have not named, travelling on the Chuxiong-Dali Expressway when the accident happens in the county of Nanhua in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture in south-western China’s Yunnan Province.

In the video dated 1st September, a female voice on his car’s satnav says: “Keep left towards Chuxiong.”

The driver veers to the left into the opposite lane, narrowly missing an approaching SUV, before straying onto a slip road.

Before long, a silver Volkswagen saloon appears in front of him, and neither driver is able to brake in time before the the two cars collide with a loud crash.

According to police, the driver had just left Nanhua Toll Station and was headed for Yunnan’s provincial capital Kunming when he misunderstood the satnav’s instructions, which meant for him to keep left and go straight instead of taking the approaching slip road to his right.

In the dashcam footage, the VW’s driver can be seen recovering by the side of the slip road, while at least one female passenger appears to have been injured.

None of those involved in the crash is believed to have sustained serious injuries.

The authorities said the motorist was given 12 demerit points for his blunder, which will result in his licence being revoked.

He was also given a 200-RMB (22-GBP) fine.

The driver, who police say has been driving for two years but was not familiar with the area, will be required to redo all his tests in order to drive again.
