A two-year-old pigeon on offer for 180 GBP has sold at an online auction for GBP 1.4 million.

The Pigeon Paradise (PIPA) auction house organised the sale of the bird among 45 competitive pigeons owned by renowned breeder Gaston Van De Wouwer, 76, in the municipality of Berlaar in the Belgian province of Antwerp.

The star attraction was champion pigeon New Kim which had a starting bid of EUR 200 (GBP 180) but then sold for the record sum.

The champion pigeon’s racing days are over after winning several awards, and it is now wanted for breeding purposes.

Hens are fertile for around 10 years, meaning New Kim has eight years left, and can give birth to between 10 and 14 offspring a year.

New Kim, who won the1st National Ace Pigeon KBDB 2018 race, is two years old.

At the end, the battle was between Chinese billionaire Dr. Guo Weicheng, who offered under the pseudonym “Hitman” and “Super Duper”, presumably an alias for Chinese Xing Wei, the owner of the Kaier Industrial Group.

The wealthy pigeon fanciers increased the price of the pigeons repeatedly between 10.30 am and 11 am by continuously bidding against each other.

The auction to date names Super Duper as the winner, possibly because he was the first to transfer the mandatory 20 percent deposit.

The final sale broke the previous record of EUR 1.25 million (GBP 1.13 million) in 2019 for Armando, a bird dubbed the Lewis Hamilton of the sport.

On that occasion, another Belgian breeder sold the pigeon to a Chinese construction tycoon.

New Kim was being sold by by Gaston Van De Wouwer, 76, and his son Kurt.

In 2014, Van De Wouwer sold 300 pigeons for a total of EUR 1.5 million (GBP 1.36 million).
