This is the moment reckless university students stand beside a hungry black bear to film it walking around a campus picnic area in search of food.

The incident was filmed in the Communications Faculty of the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon (UANL) in Monterrey, a city in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, and shared on Facebook where it has been viewed 225,000 times.

According to reports, the black bear (Ursus americanus) entered the university grounds as the group of students were about to leave.

However, the youngsters showed no fear and filmed the bear from a close distance.

In the video, the black bear is seen wandering through a picnic area before passing the giggling students and ascending up an embankment.

Local media said that it is not the first time a bear has wandered onto the university’s grounds and students have reported encounters with the stocky animals approaching classrooms or emerging from rubbish bins in the past.

The local authorities believe the bears are entering urban areas due to the high summer temperatures of over 38 degrees Celsius when the animals frequently leave the nearby mountains to find food and water.

Sightings are so common that the authorities in Nuevo Leon have erected signs advising citizens what to do if they encounter a bear in a built-up area.
