A well-known local food chain is being investigated after a video emerged of a large rat clambering over the fresh food they were selling.

Customers at Liuweizhai convenience store, a popular delicatessen in Taiyuan, China, were horrified to watch a huge rat walk all over the food they intended to buy and later eat.

One unnamed witness managed to film the extremely concerning sight and quickly posted it on Douyin – China’s TikTok – supposedly to raise awareness of the issue.

In the video, the pesky rodent can be seen scurrying inside a closed food cabinet, walking all over what seems to be pre-prepared takeaway food.

It accidentally dips its feet into one of the meals and lingers there for about seven seconds.

The rat appears to be looking for a way out as it dangles over the stacks of food, possibly after already having eaten its fill.

Company staff immediately responded after the release of the footage, claiming all the food has since been destroyed.

The local sanitary inspection office quickly followed up the company’s claims with a statement saying that the matter will be investigated in further detail.
