This is the moment a quick-witted dad manages to pull his young son clear of a pickup truck that was sent flying after being rear-ended by a lorry.

The incident was filmed at the crossroads for Borgono Street and Grecia Avenue in the city of Antofagasta in the northern Chilean region of the same name, and the footage was later widely shared on social media.

In the footage, four people are seen walking on the zebra crossing just as a pickup truck enters the frame.

As the pickup truck that was being pushed by the lorry speeds over the crossing, two group members run out of the way while the other pair, apparently father and son, turn back towards the pavement with the dad holding his son’s hand.

The man dives onto the pavement and manages to swing the boy ahead of him out of harm’s way just in the nick of time.

In another angle, a lorry is seen hitting the back of the pickup truck at the crossing, sending it hurtling towards the group.

It is unclear whether the incident is being investigated by the local authorities.

Netizen ‘Guillermo Zuniga’ said: “Three things, pedestrians should bear in mind that there is always a risk at zebra crossings. It is important for parents to hole their children’s hands while crossing. Well done to the man who was holding the boy’s hand.”

‘Beglio’ commented: “It is terrible how reckless lorry drivers can be on the roads. They forget they’re not always driving on the motorway and that they need to go much slower. It needs tougher action.”
