CCTV footage from the secondary school shows the teenagers playing outside the boys’ toilet in the five-storey teaching building when one holds the other from behind and lifts him up.

The second boy kicks a wall in an attempt to resist, and both fall backwards onto the metal railing, which immediately breaks, sending the pupils plummeting to the ground.

Their classmates, who are still standing in the corridor, stare in shock before video taken in the aftermath shows Zhao lying on the ground next to police investigators.

The incident took place on the first day of the new school year, with Zhao and Li said to be friends belonging to different classes.

Bazhong police said they were still investigating the incident, and did not comment on whether any arrests had been made.
