A Turkish public prosecutor has been dismissed after Ministry of Justice officials discovered he had a TikTok account which they deemed “incompatible with the dignity of the position”.

Fitness and music lover Nusreddin Saltabas, age not disclosed, shared images of himself performing exercises and occasionally singing – which seemed harmless enough but nevertheless angered senior prosecutors in the country.

As a result, the Council of Judges and Prosecutors, which regulates appointments, ordered that he be suspended even though he quickly shut down his accounts when the footage started to go viral.

It was also reported that senior prosecutors had also applied to block access to news reporting on the incident.

The father of the suspended prosecutor complained about the decision, saying that the videos had been posted by his son before he was appointed and it was unfair to punish him for them.

He was also defended by others like Turkish lawyer Hasan Gurbuz who said forcing him to take the videos down and attempting to ban access to news reports about the matter breached basic freedoms.

He said: “These posts are not terrorist propaganda or images of bribery or corruption. Blocking access to the news about the incident and suspending him is not the right decision. He should be properly investigated first before any action is taken.

“If he was involved with some questionable organisation it could be understood, but there is nothing like that here. He just posted some stuff about his personal life outside of his profession. TikTok is a legal entity, and it is not regarded as banned. The decision is a joke.”
