Sixty-two-year-old Claudia Mijangos known as ‘La Hiena de Queretaro’ (‘The Hyena of Queretaro’) was 33 years old when she committed the horrific crime on the night of 24th April 1989 in the state of Queretaro in Mexico.

Mijangos murdered her children, aged 11, nine, and six after she said she heard voices in her head telling her that her children were ‘demons’ who were preventing her from being with the man she loved, a priest called Ramon.

Before murdering them, she called her friend Veronica Vazquez to tell her that she was hearing and seeing things, but her friend told her to calm down and said that she would go to visit her the following day.

Vazquez says when she went to the house she found Alfredo, Mijangos’ youngest child, in a pool of blood.

She then called the police and the children’s father, Alfredo Castanos. When the police arrived they found Claudia Maria and Ana Belen, the beauty queen’s daughters had been stabbed to death.

Mijangos was sleeping next to one of her dead daughters in a bed and the police woke her and sent her to hospital for treatment for the shock she was in.

The investigation showed that Mijangos was having a psychotic episode when she killed her children.

She was diagnosed with Schizo-affective disorder and temporal lobe epilepsy.

She has now been released after being locked up for 30 years after the authorities considered her as a ‘rehabilitated criminal’ capable of reintegrating in the society.

Jose Antonio Ortega Cerbon, the judge presiding over the high court of justice said that according to the studies carried out on the former prisoner she will need to remain under medical treatment due to her mental state.

He explained: “It will be a little bit risky to release her completely; she will have to be monitored even though her sentence has ended.”

Her relatives reportedly greeted her upon her release.

In her youth she was proclaimed a beauty queen and had lead a normal life. She was married to Alfredo Castanos but they later separated after she reportedly fell in love with the priest.
