A heavily pregnant teenager has been shot reportedly by a drunk cop while she celebrated her baby reveal party and she has been left with a bullet lodged just one centimetre from her heart, which doctors fear they will never be able to remove.

The 19-year-old pregnant teen, Vitoria Lopes Pena, who is 37 weeks pregnant, was shot during her baby shower in the city of Petropolis in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro on 26th September.

An off-duty cop in a bar further down the street allegedly fired his gun in their direction multiple times while they were holding a street celebration to reveal that Vitoria’s baby is a girl, according to the media site Band News.

The reports said two people were hit by bullets and three others were injured by shrapnel. All five victims, including Vitoria, are being treated in hospital.

Meanwhile, the police said they have opened an investigation against the cop, whom they have not publicly named.

Since undergoing surgery, the mum-to-be and her unborn child are both doing well in hospital. However, doctors were unable to remove the bullet that is just one centimetre from her heart, according to reports.

The teenager’s mother said: “She is 37 weeks pregnant, close to having the baby, and will not undergo further surgery, according to the doctors. She will have the bullet lodged inside her for the rest of her life, close to her heart.”

Witnesses said the suspected cop was drunk at the time, and lives near the area where the crime took place.

According to the victim, the alleged perpetrator has a history of violence and of making threats against local residents, particularly when he is drunk.

The suspect has been released by the local authorities as the investigation into the shooting incident continues.
