As her condition was seen as non-serious she was sent home. However, hours later the results of the tests showed she was positive for COVID-19 and she was hospitalised with pneumonia.

On Sunday, the medical team decided to perform an emergency caesarian on the woman as her condition had worsened.

The operation was a success and the nurse gave birth to a baby girl weighing 1.2 kilogrammes (2.6 lbs), Health Department sources reported to local media.

Reports state the operation was carried out to increase the nurse’s chances of survival, as the operation lowered the physical pressure the baby was applying to her lungs.

The mother remains hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital while the newborn is developing properly and has undergone a coronavirus test, the results of which have not been reported.

Reports state there is another COVID-19 patient who is 26 weeks pregnant in the same hospital.

According to official sources, there are 7,753 people affected with coronavirus in Spain and 288 people have died.
