PORK CATCHINGS: School Awards Raw Pork Or Fish To Outstanding Pupils

A school in China has found a crackling way to reward its highest-achieving pupils and teachers – by awarding them either a slab of raw pork or fresh fish on a hook.

Fuyang No 10 Middle School in China’s Anhui province is seen handing out the meaty rewards as part of their autumn semester opening ceremony.

Footage from this year’s event shows uniformed pupils lining up to receive either the large slices of uncooked pork or fish on the hook as children and teachers cheer from their desks.

The kids meanwhile do a little dance to celebrate getting the gift.

Local media reported that more than 3,500 students qualified to line up as school staff doled out 10,000 kg of festive food. Each was given the choice of a 2.5 kg piece of fresh pork or two live fish of similar weight.

Afterwards, some of the lucky recipients are seen posing in for a group picture with their well-earned gifts.

Teachers from the school have told local media that the choice of the prize has proven popular with kids seeing it as an honour to receive one.

They said the kids loved showing that their work was being acknowledged and getting commended for it.

One of the teachers, identified only by the surname Zhang, said: “We used to give cash rewards but this seemed to be too materialistic. By giving them pork, we encourage the winners to share it with their families.”

The school staff said that the meat was from 100 pigs and the fish had been offered as an alternative for children from the Hui ethnic group and also Muslim students who did not eat pork.

Zhang added: “The prizes are not only for those who study well but also for those who perform well in other areas such as sports and art.”
