These images that show the moment a defender from a top-flight Bolivian team had to be rushed to hospital in the boot of a taxi after breaking his leg because there was no ambulance driver at the stadium.
Bolivian international Mario Cuellar suffered a fibula fracture in his left leg during a top-flight Bolivian match between Oriente Petrolero and Guabira in the Ramon Aguilera Costas Stadium in Santa Cruz de la Sierra in the Santa Cruz department in central Bolivia.
The unfortunate accident occurred in the 75th minute when Oriente Petrolero defender Cuellar, 30, blocked a shot from Guabira striker Juan Carlos Montenegro, 22, with his right leg.
In the act, his left leg was caught in the turf, resulting in the fracture.
After seeing the gravity of the injury the referee reportedly called for an ambulance to enter the pitch and take the player to hospital, however no ambulance arrived.
After the injured player was forced to wait, local media report some of Cuellar’s friends and family took action and hailed a taxi so he could receive urgent medical attention.
Local media report an ambulance was present in the stadium but the driver was nowhere to be found which resulted in the player being taken to hospital in the boot of a taxi with the back door open so he could fit inside.
The images show concerned onlookers escorting the injured defender and holding his ankle in place to avoid further discomfort.
The taxi had a police escort and took the player to the Foianini clinic where he recently released a video thanking fans for “all your support. Last night was a difficult moment for me. Thank you fans and family for the wishes, it will help push me forward.”
Cuellar went on to say: “The operation was a complete success now all I have left to do is get better.”
Oriente Petrolero, the home team, lost to the visiting Guabira 1-2 on the 12th match day of the Bolivian top-flight Liga de Futbol Profesional Boliviano.
The result leaves Guabira in 13th position with nine points and Oriente Petrolero in eighth position with 15 points.
