MU2809 left Nanjing Lukou International Airport in East China’s Jiangsu Province at 7:16am local time bound for the city of Xiamen in the neighbouring province of Fujian.

The fire is believed to have started with the power bank’s lithium-ion batteries, but the precise cause of the blaze is still being investigated by authorities.

The airline did not reveal whether the mobile charging battery was in use at the time of the accident.
