The eight-year-old girl named only as ‘Yin Yin’ is in stable condition following her latest surgery but remains hospitalised, according to a statement by police in the city of Hebi in China’s central province of Henan.

Yin Yin was attacked by the pit bull without a lead as she was walking to her aunt and uncle’s home to study on 16th February.

Distressing CCTV video captured the moment the girl tried to flee the crazed dog, which latches on to her left leg before dragging her across the ground.

Her left arm is also bitten by the pooch, with the attack lasting more than one minute before a witness intervenes and drives the dog away.

According to the child’s grandfather, Mr Jiang, she was taken to Henan’s provincial capital Zhengzhou for emergency treatment, and underwent a series of surgeries to treat a broken arm and mangled leg.

Her medical bills have cost her family more than 160,000 RMB (17,900 GBP), but the dog’s owner, who has not been named, has compensated the family just 37,000 RMB (4,140 GBP).

Local authorities said the dog would be impounded and put down, while the owner is to be fined 10,000 RMB (1,115 GBP) for failing to control the animal which caused serious harm.

The owner is also being investigated for other potential offences, which allegedly include using the pooch for dog fighting.

Mr Jiang told local media: “Because of the outbreak, she has been taking lessons online.

“Her aunt and uncle are teachers, so she goes to their house to take classes, then they supervise her homework.

“She was walking to her uncle’s home when the attack happened. They live only a few buildings away.

“Her left forearm is fractured, and there are serious lacerations and bites on her left leg below the knee.

“40 minutes before the attack, the dog was already wandering around the residential district.”

The police said a civil suit brought by the family against the owner was also ongoing.
