This is the moment a 40-foot pine tree falls on a family as they walk through the streets of a popular resort town leaving three of them in hospital.
The incident took place on Monday night in the city of Costa del Este, a popular tourist spa and health resort located on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in the province of Buenos Aires, in south-western Argentina.
The Carizzo family were reportedly on holiday in the city when they went for a walk through the city centre. In the video, they can be seen strolling when a huge tree, reportedly a 13-metre (42-foot) pine tree, suddenly falls on them.
One of the family’s daughters is knocked to the ground as the tree seemingly falls on her head and onlookers rush to help them.
As a result of the incident, the family’s five-year-old daughter suffered a major cut to her head and damage to her skull. Their eight-year-old daughter suffered injuries to one of her legs and their father Mauro suffered fractures to his upper arm.
The trio were taken to Santa Teresita hospital with the help of the police but the youngest daughter was taken to the Maternal and Children’s Hospital of Mar del Plata, where she underwent a tomography.
The elder girl’s leg was put in a cast and she was discharged while the younger girl remains in hospital under observation.
Their mother Denise said: “The tree was completely dry and the whole tree broke. My brother-in-law took two pictures. I grabbed my biggest daughter, the one that was walking along with my husband. And then I saw the younger one, she was covered in blood. They let us into a shop and helped us until the police and firemen arrived.
She added: “Nothing suggested that this would happen. It was a lovely day, not windy or cold. It was a shopping area full of businesses and people, nothing suggested not to pass through. We were walking and all of a sudden I heard a scream and saw the tree falling. I couldn’t do anything at the time.”
The girl’s father was advised to undergo urgent surgery but he has reportedly decided to return to the family’s home province of Junin to undergo the surgery there once his youngest daughter is discharged.
