This is the moment a man reportedly staring at his phone falls down more than 30 steps and splits his head open after trying to use an escalator the wrong way.

Bungling traveller Mr Chen, 35, suffered painful injuries to his head and face at Chongqing West Railway Station, which is in Chongqing Municipality’s Shapingba District in south-western China, on 26th September.

According to officer Feng Chuanhai, Mr Chen was watching a series on his mobile phone and walking at the same time when he spotted the escalator out the corner of his eye.

He wanted to go down but accidentally stepped onto the escalator coming up, causing him to fall and tumble all the way to the floor below, striking his face and head on the metal steps as he did so.

Mr Chen was conscious and screaming for help at the bottom of the escalator after having split his scalp open, the police said.

Feng explained: “The individual had arrived in Chongqing for work.

“He has a habit of staring at his phone and stepped onto the escalator going the wrong way.

“It was going up, but he wanted to go down, so he lost his footing, tumbled down and suffered quite serious injuries.

“His head injury was particularly frightening.

“He was bandaged up at the scene and taken to hospital.”

Mr Chen is understood to be in stable condition.
